Race Matters

Every house says race does not matter but in reality our numbers don't match our words. The UA student body is only 51% white and will be majority-minority within the next 5 years. That means proportionately about half of all Greeks should be non-white, but we all know that is not the case. Not even close, even when you consider the members of the Divine Nine and all the multicultural fraternities and sororities. Although we do not like to admit it, we are creating barriers to entry and excluding non-white people either financially through higher dues or culturally through unconscious bias or straight up prejudice. When I was a freshman a bunch of girls from my hall were interested in joining a sorority but didn't because they weren't white and didn't feel comfortable. Most houses have a small handful of minorities and say, "look! we are diverse!" We can do better than that. We MUST do better than that. This is partly why the Greek system is dying everywhere.
