There are several reasons. First, the sororities HAVE to make cuts. There are 1600 girls rushing and they may want to invite back 1200 of them. But they can't. They have to make tough decisions and since you can't really get to know someone from a 10 minute conversation, the easiest way to make cuts is by GPA. Second, GPA's matter to sororities. We need our all house gpa to be above a certain percentage or else we are put on probation. We may love you, but you're a risk we can't take. Third, it doesn't matter if you aren't dumb and were dealing with some rough stuff during high school. It's college, we're adults, and no one cares about your sob story. And before you call me a meanie, I rushed with a 2.8. I also had a rough time in high school. Was bullied and severely depressed. Also dealt with a life threatening health problem my junior year! And yes, I ended up in a house I didn't love during rush. (Love it now though!) And since I'm an adult, I understand that there are consequences for my low gpa, even though I AM a smart girl and do well in college now. Yes I had legit reasons for a poor gpa but in the real world, there are no excuses, even if they are legitimate. And you're not the only one with good reasons for a poor gpa. You're one of hundreds. Yes, hundreds of girls rushing have perfectly valid excuses for why their gpa in high school was so low. (cont'd)
