I wouldn't worry too much about slang and memes, I was able to make pretty good conversation by talking about what it's like to be here as an international student and asking them questions (and I got a bid from my top choice sorority). However unfortunately, depending on which country you're from (aka how "exotic") you are, your accent and lack of fluency might hurt your chances :/ Many of my international friends who don't speak English as their first language got cut pretty harshly and imo pretty unfairly. This is really sad and unjust, but prevalent.
