I understand the financial part completely. However, Greek life at UT, you get what you pay for. Iron spikes do have a social life and do mixers with some sororities and other spirit groups as well. However the social scene is only about like 5% what they're about. And iron spikes champion themselves to be a service group rather than a social one. Their community serves hours you have to complete each semester is pretty difficult and gets in the way of being a typical college kid. And they have a STRICT conduct policy. i understand wanting a casual social scene, however, College is way different that HS. With the exception of Tech, UT has a social scene that's second to none in the state. But spirit groups are like a single A baseball team being compared to the major leagues. It's both professional but everyone wants to be in the big leagues. If you want to join IS you do so knowing you're doing mostly service things as opposed to social life. I do agree above that spirit groups do have much better guys than in some frats because to be an iron spike it takes commitment which is respected by UT as opposed to some bottom tier frats that are just guys trying to be what they see in Tfm and old row. I understand coming to UT and wanting to change the world but you only have 4 years here and you need to have as much fun as you can. Look into fraternities and see if you can afford them because it's an experience that you can never have again. And no disrespect to..
