This does sound like someone's mom who needs help. Yes - rec letters aren't as helpful unless the person KNOWS your daughter. It's not because of how "well" it's written (although duh that's obvs just as important) - it's because of the FORM itself where it ASKS if the person writing it knows the rushee and her family and how much the sorority factors knowing her into it. The chapters won't favor a rushee as highly when alum doesn't know them vs. when the alum writing it does. Two different piles. One pile has a better chance getting in, and one pile is less likely to. It's obvs better to have one than NOT have one though. If you have lots of sorority connections for each house you can use those. If you don't, it doesn't really matter if it's a coach who helps connect you to people to write them. It's all about having the letters that matters (whatever resources you've got, use 'em - whatever that is.) Otherwise, she's going to get cut after Open House (this is round one at UT) from everyone one she doesn't have a rec from.
