i'm in a big six house here, so speaking from that perspective, the answer is both yes and no. the reality is that a lot of the girls who go any sorority at most state schools knew someone in the house before recruitment started. it might seem like it puts girls from out of state or without connections at a disadvantage. tbh it kind of does. but it's just the way it has to be. girls want to be in the same house as their friends, and sorority girls want their friends to be in their house. and beyond that, if sororities don't have at least some sort of idea of who they want, then it's difficult to find a pledge class of genuine, well-rounded girls who you're confident would be a great fit when you only have a week to get to know them. if you don't know anyone, it isn't impossible to get in any one house. you may meet a girl you really connect with during rush, and girls will pull for someone who they meet during recruitment and really like. but it's definitely tougher than if you already know someone who will advocate for you, tell their friends about you, etc.
