I'd say that you'll still make friends outside your pledge class even if you don't live in the dorms. Depending on where you live though, it can have an impact on how many friends you make in your building. Some are more social than others. I'd say that I've definitely become friends with girls who rushed my sorority as a freshman that are now sophmores, but I will say that I am very close to a lot of the girls in my pledge class too.
