Each national organization has different rules/guidelines for doing informal recruitment/COB. Some prefer that a house waits til formal to fill open slots if they have, say, less than 5 slots open. Other sororities want their local chapters to remain filled at all times, even if they have 1 slot open, so then that sorority is strongly encouraged to do informal recruitment/COB. However, as a member of sorority that has participated in spring rush atleast once during my four years, I have found that the general preconceptions about why sororities do spring rush are somewhat accurate. Especially when everyone makes quota in the fall. Usually it is because of retention. There's no shame in saying that, I am not sure why people on this thread are so quick to dismiss it as a (the) reason. Sometimes you just have an off rush---you may have misjudged interest or membership qualities. I mean, rush is sorta short/superficial---almost every sorotity has members with regrets (from an active side or a new member side). There's nothing wrong with that, it's life. Mistakes can be made, and new, wonderful girls who are good-fits can be recruited. Every single sorority on this campus is thriving, so does it really matter who does informal recruiting? I sorta look at spring as an opportunity to get first "dibs" on great girls that would have otherwise gone through the following fall as sophomores. :-)
