okay this is actually a really good question and something i wondered too before rush- i'm in one of the top sororities and honestly i knew 0 upperclassmen before rush in the sorority that i'm now it. the process might be different for other houses, but i know that we do background checks on our girls and the only thing we look for before rush is "questionable" behavior (i.e. we see you puking outside the boot and getting sloppy on the reg). the rest of who we gives bid to really comes down to the conversations we have during rush. i've heard rumors that other houses keep tabs on "cool freshman girls" and whether or not you've established a rep amongst different fraternities is a part of those houses' selection process. i'm not in these houses tho so that could be completely false. knowing some upperclassmen can help, but only really if you're good friends with them. (if you REALLY want to take that avenue then clubs are a great and not-superficial way to meet upperclassmen.) and even then, you might find that you're really good friends with sophomores in certain houses, but come rush you're just not feeling it as much as you are some of the other houses. overall i think it's better to lay low first semester. asking questions about rush and expressing enthusiasm about greek life is fine, but if you seem too enthusiastic about a particular house then that can be seen as a red flag.
