Hello from the-beyond-college world. I saw on social media rush is happening again and out of curiosity, did a little googling to see how things at Tulane stacked up since my days there. Not much has changed. PNMs, I remember being in your shoes, worried about the meetings and conversations, how I looked and dressed, whether I fit in, where my friends were going, omg this will determine my social calendar for the next few years. Members, I remember those long hours, the chants, the lost voices, the debates over who was “just nice” or “friendly,” the sometimes ridiculous cattiness about other sororities. Years removed, am I happy I went Greek? Absolutely. It sweetened the Tulane experience. However, your entire college experience doesn’t hinge on this. Years removed from from it all, no one cares if you went one sorority or another. The majority of people you meet down the line in life, who went to other schools, don’t know or care about your sorority’s reputation. Alumni networks matter and are a nice crutch when you move to a new city, but it didn’t help me score my dream job. While I loved being in Pi Phi and met some of my best friends there, I had equal numbers of Kappas and Chi Os at my wedding- and vice versa. Going through this process, keep an open mind, go where you feel comfortable, know you won’t only be friends with those in your sorority, and know that it’s just a slice of your college, and life, experience. Best of luck this week(end) and have the happiest bid day!
