As we approach spring recruitment, I wanted to provide my thoughts on the fraternities and sororities at AU. For transparency’s sake, I will admit that I am a brother of Sigma Alpha Mu. I have been pretty involved in Greek life (as well as other activities on campus) and think I have something to add by posting my thoughts on this forum. When I first got to AU, I read Greek Rank and ultimately I came to believe that it provided a poor reflection of the Greek community at AU. Let me be clear: every Greek organization has positives and negatives and there is no such thing as the tier system. I have friends in every fraternity and every sorority. The notion of tiers exists for freshman who are so intent on joining Greek life. Few actual members actually think about it. My advice is to get to know as many brothers are humanly possible and give every fraternity a chance. I know sorority recruitment requires you to do this and I wish fraternity recruitment did the same. Don’t rush based on names or “tiers”; rush everywhere.
