It’s called cross cutting. It does happen. Ucla does not guarantee bids if you make it to pref round. It’s a bit complicated but Basically what happens is that the pnm ranked let’s say A phi as their number 1 and pi phi as number 2. So the system will try to match her to her first choice at this point. Now the houses have two lists. List A and list B (nobody is cut at this round you’re either in their list A which or List B) So PNM was not on a phi’s A list. Therefore a match isn’t made. However a phi won’t get everyone from their A list presumably some girls will go to another house so the system will hold this PNM to the side to see if there’s space depending on quota for her to move from the b List up to the a list. This will depend on gms your girls from a phi’s a list matched somewhere else. And what rank the PNM is on the B list if she’s high up she has a chance to mow to the A list when girls from a Phis a list match somewhere else. However this doesn’t seem to be the case. A Phi then filled their quota but PNM didn’t make the jump from b list to a. So at this point NOW the system will try to match her to her second choice since it couldn’t make a match with the first choice. However by this point even if pnm was on pi phi’s a list she was skipped over because pnm ranked them 2 and the system hadn’t her set aside in case she could make it into a phi’s a list as mentioned before. This is where it gets risky, while she’s waiting to match to her #1 house the other house is filling their quota with girls who did select them as #1 including girls who move up from the b list. Depending how fast this house fills up (tends to fill up faster for the “better” houses). By the time it was clear a phi reached quota and PNM didn’t make it off the b list they then try to match her with her second choice but by this time it would seem pi phi had also met their quota with girls who ranked them as 1 from their a and b list. Therefore you run into the “cross cutting” scenario which is rare and very circumstantial but it does happen. Very confusing I know but I think people should know and maybe they won’t feel so crummy. It’s a numbers game it’s a weird algorithm and sometimes bad luck strikes.
