They didn't "spike to $1700." The girls were given the total amount they would have to pay for their pledge at the very beginning. Instead of having the total amount due on initiation, the sorority broke down some of it into monthly installments during pledge semester. They knew from day 1 how much they would be paying and when and that did not change. Some girls just decided to stay til the end and drop once the big charges came. This is similar to other sororities as well. Also, they didn't lose anywhere close to 40-50 girls.
