They choose you based on how well they think you would fit in with the house. It is based mostly on personality, because they want to have sisters who are fun, intelligent, and interesting people. Money is taken into account because you do need to pay dues (those from families in which money is tight often have trouble paying their fees and end up dropping) and there are often a bunch of additional costs on top of dues. Looks are considered, yes, in a very superficial way, but honestly that doesn't matter much to anyone post-recruitment. Do please remember that there is every kind of girl in every house, and while the rush system is not perfect, you really do end up where you're meant to be. The house I'm in now was probably my fourth choice during rush, and I was having an incredibly hard and stressful rush week when I was getting cut from my top choice houses, but two weeks after bid night I realized I was exactly where I needed to be. My house is full of my best friends here at USC, and I know I could talk to any girl in the house, even the ones I don't know very well, about any problem and they would listen and care. My best advice is to choose a house for the sisterhood, not the status--there have been a couple girls I met who picked the "higher" house on preference (in these cases simply because it was the higher house) and ended up dropping because they thought they made the wrong choice. Follow your gut!!!
