Subject:
Do we not remember the whole Adshade incident?

Poster Message:
Recently I've seen A LOT of people spreading rumors and claims of SA and racism taking place in the greek system. Now I'm not trying to discount these claims as many of them are very likely to be true, but I see many people taking these claims and trying to slander the fraternities in saying that they don't care at all and have done nothing to address it without even confirming if they were aware of the allegations or not. We should not forget how many people on campus have a very biased view on the greek system, as was evident with the whole Adshade incident which ended up not being true. Fraternities for the most part want to make the greek system safer and address the risks of SA taking place in the community. One issue that makes this difficult is the fact that the vast majority of members are only aged between 18-23, and thus will not have all the solutions to properly address an issue that not only plagues the greek system but the entire University campus. Furthermore, sometimes these allegations of SA are not directly communicated to the fraternities themselves which does make addressing these claims much more difficult. I really do not think it is helpful to constantly claim that fraternities do not care when a lot of guys are trying to put the effort in making the community safer as a whole. That being said I do think we should be calling out the biases we have in dealing with these issues, it is a fact that when a member that is well liked gets accused of SA the tendency of the members is to defend and back up their own brothers. This is constantly something that is mentioned in many of the allegations of SA, IMO if we really want to address these issues I really don't think we can do that when the common rhetoric being mentioned is that fraternities do not care at all about dealing with these issues. It seams like people right now are more concerned with spreading rumors and trying to defame the fraternities than actually starting the dialogue we need to address these issues that not only affect our community but our entire campus. If you keep telling guys that despite whatever efforts they do they do not really care about SA eventually that may become true, but if we instead focus on calling out the biases we have and the areas where fraternities are at fault then I think we can be A LOT more productive in dealing with these issues properly.
