Its seen like a great way to get involved. A lot of greeks participate in stuff like imagine day, opening day, clubs on campus, etc. i wont say its generally admired by ubc population per se since the proportion of greeks compared to the 40 000 people in ubc is small. probably around 1200. However, everyone in ubc does know what the greek system is, while thats something a particular club doesnt get. i think ubc general population sees it as a thing that is not for everyone but something that is really enjoyable to a sector of the ubc community. people interested in it rush, and see whether it's meant for them or not. most end up joining it. in terms of the social involvement it's a complete different network and definitively worth joining. knowing so many leaders on campus and such a great group of people that are our greeks is actually huge. once youre in the system you see why its so admirable and why it should be looked upon but obviously a lot of people dont know what it is until they've rushed. i wouldnt say it's looked down upon at all. i'd say maybe not known a lot about? seen as a group of people who party. Joining the greek system wont affect you negatively in any way, it can however affect you on a positive way. i can vouche for that.
