Idk about your chapter's dues (mine are not $1500) but yeah, sororities (and the Greek system in general) are geared towards first and second years who want to be really social and go to a lot of events, before school gets more serious. It's why people get tired of it by their third or fourth year and don't go to as many things or only go to the things they want to go to. But it's also about being in the right sorority. Some chapters DO care about grades and have study hours and academic resources, and exchanges are not mandatory. Some of my favourite moments were just studying with other girls in our chapter room and being surrounded by girls who were focused academically helped push me to be better.
