It's definitely not AS competitive - there are eight sororities and about 850+ women (each sorority has just over 100 girls) in the Greek system and 50, 000 students at UBC in total. There are pros and cons to that - pros being that it is a really tight knit community, cons being not many outside of the Greek system really cares if you're in a frat/sorority. BUT that's not the reason you should be joining - you should be doing it because you want to. It's the best way to network and meet a large group of people right in your first year, and it's probably the best way to party (if that's what you're looking for) and make amazing connections. Recruitment happens at the end of September and last year 480 girls registered. There are three rounds of recruitment. Obviously not everyone that went through got bids, and the recruitment process IS competitive. You are being judged for your GPA, looks, leadership, involvement, and of course your personality and how well you carry the conversation in the rooms, just as you would be in the States. And, obviously, some sororities are more competitive than others. Being from the States means pretty much nothing and won't give you a leg up in recruitment unless the girl you're talking to is from the same place or something.
