1. As far as I know, recs can only help you. Lots of people don't have them so not having them won't count against you. But it's still nice to have them because it gives houses a lot of information on you and they can look out for you during rush. 2. Yes. 3. You have to get them from greek people that's the point... The way recs work, you get them for a specific house from alumna of that house. For example, if your friend's mom was a Delta Gamma, then she can write you a rec for Delta Gamma. So if you're looking to get recs, I would start reaching out to your friends' moms and have your mom reach out to her college friends/coworkers/etc and ask if they were in a sorority. If you like particular houses, you can be on the lookout for alumna of that sorority. And you can also go to your local panhellenic council to find alumna, but since it's U of I, I would just try to find people who actually know you because recs aren't super important like they are in the south.
