Definitely, join a group of guys that you click with and will be friends with. It's not like the old days where Greeks controlled the social scene and people actually cared which house you were in. Don't get me wrong, some of the coolest guys are in the more prominent houses. But some of the coolest guys are also in the smaller and low-key houses too. Join where you feel comfortable.
