Like the mom above, my daughter (an out of state student with NO smu connections) also pledged one of the so called best houses her freshman year, so local influence really isn't a magic wand. I know she had many friends that year who chose to drop and rerush the next year. These students all got bids as sophomores (and the ones they wanted) because they had another year to strengthen friendships and get their grades to even better levels. One girl did transfer the next year, but she was a promiscuous drunken trainwreck, and nailed her own coffin shut. A GPA high enough to go through recruitment does not meet the standards for most individual chapters. Staging a protest will probably guarantee independence, but getting more involved and studying hard is more likely to guarantee positive results.
