At SMU, if you want to be in a sorority, you have to select from what is available to you. The hard fact is that the people getting bids to what is perceived as "better" sororities are people with deep SMU connections (multiple legacies and multiple generations of SMU alums). And even those people have their choices limited by those family connections. In other words, there very few people who get their pick of all eight sororities. And it not unusual for girls to join sororities that they actually hate -- but do so only because of family pressure. In the big picture, there is very little practical difference among the eight sororities on campus. Keep in mind that the ones you call 7 & 8 would be top anywhere else. Everyone knows that family connections is a big factor at SMU on who gets into whatever. And this does limit the choices available to everyone else. The reality is that, if you want to join a sorority at SMU, join one that you can get in. You'll have just a much fun -- maybe even more.
