For locals - yes, for the most part it is important that you have developed relationships with some of the girls in the sorority. This is often because by the time bids comes around they want to know that they can trust you to go through the pledging process (and if you were to depledge that you wouldn't run to the school and rat on them about hazing). There are girls who make it through the rush process in the spring without ever going out with the sorority in the fall - most of time these are older girls though. Nationals - there is absolutely no need to be rushed. Yes, some girls in the sororities take people out in the fall, but that's no indication of your chances. It's stupid that they take people out, but it's how they win some girls over from locals.
