These initial cards are for an interview, it's not an invite to join. Most have one or two (sometimes three) rounds of interviews and there are cuts every time. You can get a first round invite and still get cut. Pre tap is the Thursday before tap where societies give out invitations to actually join to their top choices, who don't have to accept. The last week is pretty crazy because people accept and sometimes drop if they get invites from bigger societies, so the last week there are sometimes more invites given out for last minute interviews so the societies can fill out their class. And in terms of size different societies vary.
