I’m in one of those sororities and we’ve definitely had to fight to get drop legacies that didn’t fit our chapter and/or we had legitimate concerns about. There may not be a ton of them at a school like WashU but if they’re taking up spots on a party list because we have to keep them, it’s likely they’re a relatively wealthy white woman instead of someone from a less privileged background who could be an awesome addition to our chapter. Not saying that all legacies are bad people but it’s the same reason getting rid of legacy policies for schools puts applicants on even footing.
