I think people tend to make formal recruitment as a sophomore sound more realistic and easy than it actually is. Honestly even if you have close friends in several chapters, if you go through formal recruitment as a non-freshman, there's still a high probability that you will get cut in the earliest rounds before your friends even have a chance to really support you in front of the rest of the chapter. The chapters don't take more than a couple sophomores each (probably only around 2 on average) during spring recruitment so I wouldn't advise getting your hopes up too much about that. If you are invited to participate in either COB or informal fall recruitment, that will definitely leave you with a much much higher chance of receiving a bid. I would recommend either option over formal recruitment as long as you would theoretically feel comfortable in one of the chapters that end up participating.
