Get a rec for every house, don't slack off because some are easier than others to get! It shows that you took the time and energy to get one and are giving every house the effort and consideration they all deserve. All houses would like you to have one as a baseline introductory form. Houses, even "top", don't necessarily drop you because you don't have a rec letter, but if you don't know anyone in the chapter super well and aren't gorgeous with a clean rep and 4.0, you need one. If all things are equal between you and another girl but she has a rec and you don't, it will probably hurt you. No, it is not weird to ask a woman you don't know to write one. Email the alum chapter and attach a resume with a well-written request for someone to write you one, and send a thank you note immediately if they say they will. Sometimes they wait to send their rec letter to see if you had good enough manner to formally thank them. Ask on FB, reach out to friend of friend's mothers/aunts/sisters/cousins. Just be polite and gracious
