I am not in a top chapter, but I've always wondered if it's worth it. I hear about thing that either are hazing or are borderline hazing. Things like forcing girls to stay in freezing pools for hours into the night until 2 or 3am so the chapter can do well at anchorsplash, sisters being told not to wear letters because they're looks aren't "up to XYZ standard" , being told by the chapter to diet, sisters not being allowed to run for sweetheart for certain fraternities, cutting good PNMs (involved, personable, high GPA, legacy/letter of rec) because they're not pretty enough, requiring gym hours, removing girls from the roster to artificially inflate the chapter GPA, being screamed at by your recruitment chair after hours of door stack practice because you're still "not loud enough", having alums participate in philanthropies against the rules, etc. And I just wanna know, if even half of this stuff is true, is it worth it? Just to be popular? Like I know my chapter's ritual/values explicitly or implicitly discourage/forbid all of the above and I find it hard to believe every chapter's doesn't on some level. It just seems like a lot to go through as a member/ a lot to put your sisters through, and a lot of pretending/deceiving on the chapter's part to maintain something that has no value after graduation.
