Okay so today I was at Beef O Brady’s where Delta Tau Delta was having their event. I was sitting there and eating but not rushing them (rushing other frats). All PNMs that showed up to DTD were white. Like all but one (maybe he was black or something idk). And a bunch of non Greeks near me were saying “okay so how many blacks do you see there? Oh yeah I see one! He probably has a white personality.” Like for real? I’m actually a minority myself (not black) and I want to be in a fraternity. So just because I want to rush, that makes me a “white personality guy”? So just because I’m a certain skin tone, I should know my place and only hang out with people of that skin tone? I get it that minority dudes rarely rush at this school. I’m not denying it, it’s just plain and simple and anyone going to a rush event knows this. But sometimes we just want to do this because we want to try something new. I personally didn’t want to rush and had mixed feelings (part of me wanted to rush and part of me didn’t). But now that I think of it, what’s the worst that can happen. Maybe the guys won’t like me. Maybe they will. I’m sure at least one out of 13 fraternities will like me. Maybe phi delt won’t but kappa sig will. Maybe pike won’t but sigma nu will. Just saying as an example. It doesn’t make me a white dude. I’m still a minority dude. I just don’t want to graduate from college saying “I wish I rushed.” I would rather leave college after 4 years saying “I can’t believe I rushed a frat” instead of “I wish I did.” Even if I’m in a room with all white dudes, I’m still going to be who I am. It won’t change. Greek is majority white and just like most things in America, it was made by white people. But I’m not going to act like every white person in Greek is some devil. Of course there’s some but theres some everywhere, even the Jesus Christ club. Regardless of the stereotypes and what people say, I’ll rush and I’ll find my group of friends and I’m confident theyll just see me as a brother too, instead of a “a guy with a white personality.” Sorry for the essay but had to vent.
