Third. There is an often stated concern with Greek Life that it is just “buying your friends”. I can assure you, joining a frat is no guarantee that its members will be your friends. This is the whole purpose of rush, to meet the many members of fraternities, to find people you have common interest with. If invited to closed rush, you’ll then have the opportunity to get to know the other people interested in pledging the frat, another important factor to keep in mind as you will be spending a lot of time with your pledge class during the pledging process. To end, you are not buying friends by joining a frat. Joining a fraternity is about become a part of something bigger than yourself. Its function is to provide its members with the tools necessary to accomplish goals for the betterment of the community, the university, the brotherhood, and yourself. Whether that’s throwing a party or organizing a community service event, your contribution (through time and money) should not be seen as a requirement so much as a personal desire.
