Subject:
Reflections on Kappa Sigma at UVA

Poster Message:
Kappa Sigma holds a special place in UVA's history, having been founded on December 10, 1869, in Room 46 East Lawn. This marked the creation of the Zeta Chapter, a fraternity rooted in the principles of Fellowship, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service. Over the years, the Zeta Chapter gained recognition for its community contributions, including its signature event, the annual "SpeakUp Kappa Corner K." This fundraiser supports the CKG Foundation, an organization dedicated to raising awareness about teenage depression and anxiety. However, in September 2024, Kappa Sigma faced serious repercussions when the University of Virginia ended its Fraternal Organization Agreement (FOA) with the fraternity. This decision followed an investigation into hazing allegations, which included reports of physical, verbal, and alcohol abuse directed at new members. The findings led UVA to ban Kappa Sigma from re-establishing its presence on grounds until at least the 2028–2029 academic year. The fraternity is also required to cease all operations, including any unofficial activities, during this time. This situation highlights the university's strict stance against hazing and its commitment to fostering a safe and respectful environment. It also serves as a sobering reminder of the need for fraternities to uphold the values they were founded upon.
