Everything in your post is correct except for prefs. If you rank both houses you are guaranteed a bid to one of them, not "more likely to," but guaranteed, and more likely to get your first choice, but no promises there, you could end up with your second. If you have two pref houses and only rank one and you are not high enough to match with them then you are out of the process and not getting a bid. Ranking only one of your pref houses does NOT give you an advantage with that house. Your rankings of the houses have no effect whatsoever on how the houses rank you, and it's the houses' ranks that drive the process. If you absolutely would not accept a bid from your second choice no matter what then leave them off your card and accept the possibility that you could go bidless. If you only have one house at pref and put it on your card you are getting that bid and will have an easy night.
