money was definitely a factor for me. after a year i realized it really wasn't worth paying more than twice as much as i would at uva for a school that i felt pretty meh about. also like you i thought it would be good to be somewhere far from home where i wouldn't know anyone from high school, but i ended up wishing i knew more people going in. a lot of people in ivy league/nescac come from the same california/ny/boston area private schools and they all know each other. like @unbiased said, the social life at uva is a lot more active and people know how to have fun, whereas at ivies/nescac schools a lot of people spend their weekends studying. northern schools are also crazy liberal and very focused on social justice issues, which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it, but in my experience it led to a lot of conflict and a pretty unwelcoming atmosphere on campus. also brown does have greek life but it's not very popular, and many northern schools don't have greek life or are moving to eliminate greek life, so if you're interested in going greek that's something to consider.
