It can be challenging to get into Kappa, Gamma Phi, Chi Omega, Theta and Pi Phi unless you have well established friends in these sororities. If you are from out of state, just because you have one good friend, doesn't mean she will have enough pull to get you in unless you are super spectacular and have met other members and they like you and are going to pull for you too. Many of us have seen members get up and make desperate speeches to keep a certain someone or another during membership selection, and even though the person might be awesome, there are just others who pull more weight, especially if they already know lots of people. As others have said, even if you do get a bid to one of these, it doesn't mean you will be welcomed the way other obvious bid list picks will be. If you feel like people are lukewarm about seeing you return to the next party, remember they will be equally unenthusiastic when you show up on bid day, and that is a terrible feeling.
