Recruitment is all a numbers game. The way it works is that the chapters give Panhellenic a bid list either after sisterhood or after pref (depends on the chapter). Panhellenic then has algorithms to determine how many girls off that bid list actually get a bid to that chapter as they want to ensure that all houses have girls run home to them on bid day. It’s a misconception that a chapter member knows if your going to get a bid. They might know that you’re on the bid list and how high you are on that list, but because of this whole Panhellenic algorithm thing it is very difficult to determine which girls are actually going to get bids. If they’re high on the bid list, ya they’re probably a good shot. If they’re lower it’s harder to tell. NOW, what happened this year? A couple things. Because we had Theta participate in formal recruitment, Panhellenic had to revise the algorithms and basically make guesses about how theta would perform. They were not accurate in making these estimates which threw off the bid numbers. Also, they were extremely strict with suicide bidders this year. Only a a very very slim few got bids if they suicided bidded. So in short yes, there were mess ups mostly in determining how many girls got bids/in determining how many girls came back to pref each house. Panhellenic in an effort to make the process as fair as possible made mistakes like dropping girls from houses that wanted them back, not giving bids to houses that put them on their bid list. Unfortunately this was especially the case with certain chapters like KKG. Recruitment is a numbers game and it’s extremely difficult to gauge. This year was a bad one, hopefully Panhellenic will do better moving forward.
