It's not that aphi isn't sought after, it's just that they are sought after by different kinds of girls. They recruit on looks and # of followers first, and want hot girls. Believe it or not, a lot of girls drop aphi early on because they know that they are not a fit in that house. And that's okay! IMO GPA, Sisterhood, Leadership, Philanthropy are very secondary reasons for these girls to join a sorority (and again that's okay-girls rush for different reasons). They are big partiers, super social and frat boys LOVE them. Girls suicide them because they would rather have no house at all then not be an aphi. This really screwed up recruitment this year because a lot of girls pref'd aphi and a lower tier house and then suicided aphi. If they didn't get a bid from aphi, they dropped completely.
