Because most ppl at Cal were social outcasts and nerds in high school. Because most people in the top sororities/frats at this school would be in bottom ones at another school. So they hold onto whatever semblance of social dominance they have and make a huge deal over whose the most popular and hot and whatever when in reality everyone here is a nerd and this system is barely what you could call "greek"
