How is allowing the opportunity of COB sorority membership to another person, if it is done according to both the specific org's and the panhellenic's rules, distasteful to so many here? Having ONE spot open should not mean a sorority hosts an open party where 25 women sign-up to attend that ONE chance to belong. That's fooling and wasting the time of the 24 people who will not be chosen, and the energy and time of the house involved, whether or not the one chosen was pre-known to the host org. Many years ago that distasteful "25 invited/attending for one open spot" situation used to happen all the time around the country, because it gave the orgs the excuse of practicing their recruitment skills without having to add new members. Some houses went so far as to hold several COB parties for groups of women, with absolutely no bids planned because the house was already at total. I do not believe we want to return to those bad old days so the next best thing is a house with very few openings COB bids a person, or very few people, already known to them. If that is done in a way people consider super shady and secret, assumptions could be wrong. Now if these bids and initiations are leading to houses going above total, then please inform the greeks in charge. No house should COB if they are at or above house total.
