You don't need to rush as soon as you join college. I joined as a sophomore and I'm really glad that I wasn't in a house as a freshman. It gave me an opportunity to get to know life at Cal as in independent. I made friends that I probably wouldn't have made if I had the comfort of my house. Now I have close friends within and outside the Greek system. I feel that my worldview has expanded because of it. So no rush to rush! There is the issue of struggling a bit to get into parties but it really wasn't a big deal for me.
