First off it's not uncommon at all for girls to rush as sophomores. It might put you at a small disadvantage because there are higher quota numbers for freshman, but it's really not a big deal at all. Less than 25% of people are in Greek life here, it's not huge, and you can definitely have a social life without being in a sorority if you decide it's not right for you. My little was a transfer after her sophomore year too and she actually made friends with a lot of other transfer students at first, but she made plenty of other friends in time. Being in a sorority will definitely help speed that process up, but also remember that we do spring rush here, so you would have to go through first semester making friends on your own. We have tons of other clubs/sports/orgs though so it's not so bad. I hope that this was helpful for you! Good luck! :)
