As the UCSD Panhellenic Health Advisor, it is with great concern that I address the current state of recruitment within Alpha Chi Omega (AXO). Over the past few years, we have seen a noticeable and troubling trend in the chapter’s overall health and image, particularly with regard to body mass index (BMI) and physical appearance. AXO has long stood as a pillar of excellence, but recent recruitment standards seem to have become less selective, resulting in a significant increase in members with unhealthy BMIs. While sorority life should be inclusive and supportive, it's also crucial to prioritize the well-being of all members and ensure that we maintain the values that our organizations uphold. Additionally, the recruitment of members who do not meet the chapter's historical standards of presentation is causing concern within the larger Panhellenic community. This is not just about looks, but about health. We cannot ignore the impact of these trends on the overall well-being of the chapter. As a Panhellenic community, we must ask AXO to reflect on its recruitment process and make necessary adjustments to ensure the long-term health and reputation of the chapter. I believe AXO has the potential to be more selective and intentional in their recruitment to foster a stronger, healthier, and more vibrant sisterhood. We must hold ourselves accountable, not just to tradition, but to the health and success of our members. Let's take this as an opportunity for growth and improvement. I hope AXO will consider this feedback seriously and work toward a more thoughtful and health-conscious recruitment process in the future. Sincerely, Jessica Simmons UCSD Panhellenic Health Advisor
