I definitely would get recs, but connections are what's most important for many houses. The number of recs isn't what counts, having them. If you have recs and other non-connected girls don't and you're the rare PNM a Southern house really likes, you have an advantage. So don't overlook them. I've seen Northern girls get into Southern houses but usually only with connections. Maybe a rare time when someone does without any connections. I know that's not what you want to hear (but it's the way it is in life - think about a job search, no different - you know someone at Company A and the other person doesn't, you're more likely to get in for the interview) but going somewhere where you know no-where does present challenges. It's not just the SEC either. I have friends who've gone elsewhere and faced similar challenges. I don't think it would matter if you told members you want into a more Southern house - it could become a bit awkward, in my opinion. You are at a disadvantage so it's better to know now and do your best when you're here. And have fun - there's nothing as off-putting as someone desperate to get into a certain house!
