Is it required for them to participate? If not then they are under no obligation to get involved. When a professor says this will not be on an exam but is good to know, I highly doubt you write it down in your notes. They are not being snobby for electing not to participate in an optional event. Have you ever missed a day of school in your life? Is that being snobby by missing class?
