Depends on the chapter and it can help you at times. The only time it can hurt you is if you made a bad impression on the alumni that is writing it. Only ask alumni you know not some random alum that you know was a member of XYZ chapter. You only need one rec per chapter -- don't be the PNMs that is known as the only one who had 10 alums send recs on her.
