Since Recs derailed things last year, here is what you need to know. Fraternities don’t care much about recs unless you are a legacy, and even that doesn't matter much. 1. Sororities don't require recs but help if you don’t know girls in a house. 2. Good recs might help you. Bad recs will definitely hurt you. 3. Legacies are different for every sorority. Mostly, you need to be a sister, daughter or granddaughter of a member. A few allow a legacy to be a niece. 4. Legacies are not guaranteed bids in ANY house. 5. You can’t write a rec for yourself and your mom can’t write it either, unless she is a member. Girls have tried and failed. They must be written by alumni of THAT sorority; in some cases sororities allow the actives to write them. 6. How do you get someone to write a rec? Ask women you know. If you don’t know someone in a sorority, ask friends of your parents, your parent’s friends, people who attend your church, your high school teachers, and people you work with. 7. You can ask a person you don’t know to write you a rec, but don’t expect them to bend over backwards. Some recs ask how long you have known the PNM and they will be honest and say they don’t know you. 8. Have a resume and picture of yourself ready for the person writing the rec and a stamped envelope. 9. Start early. Most houses want the recs no later than Thanksgiving. 10. Send the person who wrote you the rec a thank you note. Remember, alums are doing you a favor!
