Answer: it doesn’t really matter to most people. There’s schools in the south where everyone back from 100+ years from your family or town was an XYZ so the expectation is that you will be, too. It probably does help with networking in those places, but that’s not everywhere. That’s why at a school like this one, a nationally smaller sorority is often the most sought after. The only real need you will have for nationals as an undergrad is if something serious goes wrong in your chapter or you need extra help in recruitment for low numbers. I don’t see either being an issue with DPhiE at NYU. As an alum, you might not find a DPE alum chapter in every city you move to, but how important is that? The main part of your sorority life occurs in undergrad- so pick the chapter you like and where you get along or else...what’s the point? Why pay to be part of an organization you don’t really like for some future benefit that you may or may not even need?
