Pi Kappa Phi Statement: ETA UPSILON CHAPTER SUSPENDED AT MIAMI UNIVERSITY CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and Miami University announced the suspension of the Eta Upsilon Chapter on Monday following violations of hazing and alcohol policies. The chapter will regain its recognition in January 2017 after undergoing a significant reorganiz ation led by the National Headquarters staff and local volunteers. “Hazing has no place in Pi Kappa Phi,” said Chief Executive Officer Mark E. Timmes. “We expect all members to be treated with dignity and respect, and when chapters are unable to make good choices within the boundaries of the fraternity’s risk management policy and standards of conduct, the national organization has an obligation to hold them accountable.” Pi Kappa Phi worked intentionally with the university’s Office of Ethics and Studen t Conflict Resolution, as well as the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life, to ensure the university and fraternity’s sanctions mirrored each other. “Pi Kappa Phi is thankful for our partnership with the Division of Student Affairs staff ,” said Timmes. “Although our students’ recent behavior is disappointing, we look forward to rebuilding Pi Kappa Phi’s reputation at Miami University in the coming years by re -establishing a positive and impactful member experience.” Pi Kappa Phi seeks to create an uncommon and lifelong brotherhood that develops leaders and encourages service to others for the betterment of our communities. Dating back to the fraternity’s founding on D ecember 10, 1904, at the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C., Pi Kappa Phi has exemplified a commitment to leadership, service before self, and building a better worl d. Today, on more than 180 campuses across America, Pi Kappa Phi continues to broaden its commitment to building exceptional leaders through uncom mon opportunities.
