Not extremely competitive but not easy either, I suppose. I would say more people drop themselves than get dropped (for recruitment in general not for a house). Don't need letters of rec, but if someone you know personally offers to write you one you shouldn't refuse, and connections can obviously help but there is never a guarantee. All in all, stressing out won't help you. Relax, stay positive, and remember that all the houses have something to offer you. If a house doesn't want you, why would you want them back?
