It's not just socially adjusting it's the whole thing about going to Duke, spending your life trying to get into a social group, taking classes like Spanish which have no career relevance. The whole point of Duke is to fulfill a lot of requirements that frankly don't add much to your career. So education helps very little. Next, of course the whole culture is about seeming cool to people and throwing parties and partying a lot. It leaves very little time to have a serious thought about doing something real with your life. I also think Duke is the level of ambition under any sort of great accomplishment. Good grades, good paying job, very little interest in being the next Steve jobs, and if there are, there's very few people who execute this. I don't necessarily think social hierarchy ruins it...but I see your point.
