Columbia is a fairly progressive school, but Greek Life exists outside of Columbia. You can’f just change recruitment; it is heavily determined by the national levels of greeklife. And also Columbia rush is very progressive in two ways; first just look at the girls even in top sororities. Sure there are a lot of traditionally pretty white girls, but there are a lot of girls who don’t fit that mold and would be rejected in a heartbeat at any top sorority at a conservative school (ie. some body diversity and a lot of racial diversity compared to traditional Panhel Greeklife which is typically like <2% non-white). There’s progress to be made, obviously, but Columbia Greeklife is very progressive compared to the norm. Second, if you conplete recruitment at Columbia, you are guaranteed a bid. The main reason that half of the girls drop out of rush is because they think that they’re too good for the sororities that invite them back, which is a problem not with the system, but with the mentality of the girls themselves. Literally anyone can join a sorority at Columbia, so there is no systematic exclusion from Greeklife. People are just bitter that they get cut from “top” houses without realizing that the reason they consider those houses to be the “top” are the same constructs (ie. beauty/wealth) they think is unfair for rush to focus on... As for bid promising, there are very strict rules about it and big consequences. It’s just simply impossible to put every single person under surveillance 24/7 and catch them all.
